I LOVE FOOD! I think about food a lot and when me and my girlfriend are chatting, more often than not, it’ll be about what we’re eating, what we’ve eaten or what we’re going to eat. Lauren is a fantastic cook! Over the (nearly) 3 years we’ve been together my stomach has grown increasingly but it has been worth it to taste some of the amazing dishes she cooks day in and day out.
Now as you know I love films as well, so whenever there’s a combination of the 2 then count me in! I’ll admit that when we went to see this film way back in 2014 I wasn’t expecting much but it turned out to be my favourite film of 2014. It stars the director of Iron Man and 2016’s Jungle Book, Jon Favreau. You guessed it ladies and gentlemen, todays film is Chef.
This film is heart-warming, funny, picturesque, toe-tapping and will make you want to quite your job instantly and set up your very own food truck.
It follows Carl Casper as a popular chef at a high end restaurant who’s stuck in a rut and a top critic gives him a poor review thus ending in a showdown that goes viral. He then heads to Miami, buys a food truck and travels across America with his son and friend making great food and fans along the way.
I read a review before I went to see this that said “Don’t go on an empty stomach”, I mean I wouldn’t normally but I made sure I was especially full up before we entered. Within the first 20 minutes, I hadn’t even digested my Mexican sandwich and I was hungry! It almost got to the point where I thought we were watching food porn. They cook some amazing things and although I’ve never been a big fan of cheese, I have made several attempts to create the melted cheese toastie that Carl makes only to be left disappointed every time, but I am not prepared to give up!
Some criticized the cameo’s and him getting his mates involved, but if my mates were Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and Robert Downey Jr then I would definitely get them involved in my movie! I thought they were all nice little additions especially Hoffman ranting and swearing and losing his cool. And I love Oliver Platt, I must watch more of his films because he’s such a cool actor and I really enjoyed his part in this.
But the best bit of the film is when they travel back home on their food truck. I never knew a road trip selling amazing foods could be that much fun! The places they visit is amazing and when they headed to Texas to get those 4 slabs of meat, I nearly passed out through sheer joy as to what was on screen. I thought they done incredibly well to only try a small portion of it, if that was me, kiss good bye to at least half of it!
I also purchased the soundtrack not long after seeing it and when at home, if I get the chance to cook, then this soundtrack is what I listen to. When I cook and have this on I feel like I can create anything and that it will taste amazing. If we’re hosting a dinner party this is also our background music and everyone without fail will always ask what album is it, which then leads on to us lending them the Blu Ray, and soon me making a copy of the album for them.
Favreau, Leguizamo and the young Emjay Anthony are great together and really look like they enjoyed making this film and learning to cook delicious things. Emjay steals plenty of scenes and having watched a couple of his interviews for the press runs, he seems like a genuine nice kid, charming and funny. Will be interesting to see what he does next.
This film is social media heavy, but why deny the inevitable. If this was a true story, then these guys (most notably Percy) have created a successful business without spending any money on advertising and thus should be hailed geniuses! Social Media is the future of advertising so I feel they have done the clever thing here and have shown people that it isn’t rocket science. You just need to be creative, dedicated and use a bit of common sense.
So that’s it for today! If you’ve seen Chef and love it as much as I do, then let me know. Are there any other foody films out there that I should watch?
Thanks for reading guys!
Until next time… 🙂
